Sign of the Times
Signs that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is on the chopping
block are now more obvious than ever. Although talk of Barney Frank introducing
legislation this month that will overturn the law is getting louder than ever,
that is not the tell tale sign that online casinos are about to etch a permanent
niche in the American gambling market. The recent actions of a major brick and
mortar gambling operator is the dead give away.
Harrah’s Entertainment seems to be preparing themselves for the future and it
is clear that they believe that future involves online casinos in the United
States. They have started up a brand new company and chosen Mitch Garber to
head up the project.
Some may know Mitch Garber as the former Chief Executive of PartyGaming.
PartyGaming is among Internet gambling companies in the world. The publicly
traded company holds the eighth largest share of the worlds Internet Poker
market. PartyGaming is also known for its great online casinos. Before the
passage of Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, PartyGaming was actually
the world’s largest provider of Internet Poker.
“Harrah's is tipping their hand early, but do not think they are the only Las
Vegas based casino company that has thought about moving their business to the
Internet,” said observer Kyle Reevers, offering his insight into the
significance of a business move such as the one recently taken by PartyGaming.
“It certainly looks as though this administration is going to be more
receptive to Internet gambling, and the casino companies have done their
homework and will be prepared.”
