Resorts Atlantic City is the first legal casino outside of Las Vegas,
so the company certainly has a sense of tradition. That may be the
reason for its new experiment involving slot machines.
At one point the sweetest sound to come out of a slot machine, far
surpassing the music and sound effects, was the clang of coins splashing
into a tin tray. Times have changed significantly as there are very few
slot machines that still deal with coin payouts. Most slot machines
either pay out in paper vouchers or with credit. While it is true that
money is money, part of the casino experience is the entertainment. A
flashing sign saying you have won $1 million is not as exciting as
having the same sign followed by a endless stream of money spewing out
of a machine!
That being said, leave it to the oldest casino in Atlantic City to
bring back the classic style of slot machines. The experiment will
reveal as to whether players are simply nostalgic for the old style of
gaming or whether it was a system that was not broken and needed no
fixing. Resorts patrons are very happy.
“You think you're playing a real slot machine here,” said customer
Jeanette Snell. Snell recently won a modest $25 jackpot, paid out in
coins.
“This feels like a game; the other ones, it's just losing money.”
When she finally cashed out she had the pleasure of scooping several
coins into an oversized plastic cup. This used to be the norm in
Atlantic City. The plastic cups were replaced by the coin-free system
to accommodate less able bodied patrons. But many patrons identify with
Snell.
“This is real money!” said Snell.
“I like this better.”
