Regulating online casinos is bound to create an
irreversible problem gambling epidemic and innocent children will
develop the habits of compulsive gamblers due to the easy accessibility
of gambling activity.
At least that is what opponents of online casinos
have no problem blurting from their soap boxes. The only problem with
this “freedom of speech” is that it is not founded in any truth. Most
scientific studies have shown that online casinos do not have a great
effect on the increase in problem gambling numbers. In truth, there are
still more accounts of problem gambling in brick and mortar casinos than
found at online casinos; an interesting point at a time when online
casinos are beginning to out perform their brick and mortar
counterparts.
This is the sort of data that Professor Dan Ross
has uncovered in his study of gambling activity. Professor Ross is the
director of research for the National Responsible Gambling Program of
South Africa.
“On a theoretical level, online gaming’s increased
accessibility should make it more dangerous than traditional gaming,”
explained Professor Ross.
“But... it does not seem to be the reality.”
Ross doe access one danger that online casinos do
pose to problem gamblers, but it is a threat that brick and mortar
casinos pose as well. The danger to problem gamblers is access to lines
of credit beyond their means. For this problem Professor Ross offers
the simple solution of placing restriction on accounts, creating a
betting limit.
“It can be said that people may not fully appreciate the financial
implications of using credit and it could get even responsible gamblers
into trouble,” continued Ross.
