When Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell sought to legalize slot
machines in his state he promised that revenue from the popular casino
activity would generate tax relief for millions of residents.
Unfortunately, it appears that Pennsylvania’s second year of gains from
slot machine revenues will only be enough to provide tax cuts for
millions of Pennsylvania residents that resembles the current year’s tax
cuts.
Slot machines were expected to generate no less than $1 billion each
year during initial performance forecasts. In the current economy, slot
machines are only expected to bring in roughly $770 million.
The newest expect some in now small amount, as a matter of fact,
Governor Rendell boasts of that slot machines being able to generate
even that much in the current economy is an achievement. Pennsylvania
slot machines are able to generate well over a half billion dollars in
tax revenues at a time when many people inside and around Pennsylvania
are losing their jobs and scraping from money.
The tax revenues that slot machines do provide will be enough to save
well over 100,000 low income seniors from having to pay school property
tax.
“Huge cuts in school property taxes, that's what we promised and
we're here to deliver it again,” said Governor Rendell said during a
news conference in Pittsburgh. Rendell spoke directly to the
demographic that is certain to benefit from slot machines at the Market
House senior center.
However, Rendell is confident that once the economy begins to
recover, slot machine are certain to generate the promised $1 billion
each year.
“You know what's happened?” said Rendell said.
“Pennsylvanians who used to go to West Virginia to
gamble or who used to go Atlantic City to gamble or who used to go to
Delaware to gamble, they're gambling in Pennsylvania and we're getting
the benefit of it, just like I predicted.”
