Minnesota Blocks Online Casinos
The United States does not have a clear point of view on online
casinos. That is the reason that gambling has always been a state
issue. Thankfully, Barney Frank intends to repeal the Unlawful Internet
Gambling Enforcement Act. A law like the Unlawful Internet Gambling
Enforcement Act really has no place in the federal law books. Gambling,
whether at brick and mortar casinos or at online casinos, should be the
prerogative of the various state governments.
Minnesota is an example of a state that does not want online casinos
or online gambling. Regulators from the state are attempting to use a
law to coax Internet service providers into blocking online casinos from
access to Minnesota residents. Minnesota is appealing to 11 major
service providers to block almost 200 online casinos and online gambling
sites.
The service providers have not yet responded to the Minnesota Alcohol
and Gambling Enforcement Division. The division expects a response in
two to three weeks. The service providers that the Minnesota government
have turned to include: AT&T, Charter Communications, Comcast Cable, and
several others.
Minnesota is not the first government to try to get Internet service
providers involved in their censorship plans. Australia recently tried
the same thing on a national level. Often Internet service providers,
especially in the United States, are completely against most forms of
censorship of the Internet; especially when dealing with an
internationally legal business like online casinos.
Hopefully the service providers in Minnesota will not succumb to the
pressures of the state government. The pressure is on for Barney Frank
to pass his regulation legislation for online casinos.
