Australia is not the friendliest country to online
casinos and Internet gambling, but it is very loyal to its professional
sporting leagues. That is why the Australian Football League is hoping
the government can overcome their differences with online casinos and
make and amendment to the Interactive Gambling Law.
Betfair and the Australian Football League are
trying to get the government to pass legislation that will benefit the
Australian gambling industry by hundreds of millions of dollars. They
are asking for in play betting.
As the law currently stands, gambling operators are
not allowed to accept wagers once an Australian Football League match is
underway. However other leagues profit greatly from allowing wagers to
be placed at any point in the game. The English Premier League is a
great example. Of course it is now surprise that the English allow
players much more gambling options since the United Kingdom took the
lead in embracing online casinos and Internet gambling. The country is
the first to regulate online casinos and other forms of Internet
gambling.
The English Premier League allows players to place
bets during the game on predictions of various outcomes: winners,
losers, scoring margins, highest goals scored, etc.
The Australian Football League has a good chance of
getting legislation passed as the Rudd Government does not appear to
outright object to the idea. I could be because industry analysts
predict that the Australian gambling market loses $300 million a year to
foreign markets just by refusing to offer in play wagering.
