Two teams in Major League Baseball have struck a
deal with very popular provider of online casinos and Internet gambling
entertainment. The match up is odd to say the least, as most
professional sporting leagues in the United States are lobbying against
online casinos. The American sporting leagues claim the regulating
online casinos in the United States runs the risk of endangering the
integrity of sports match ups.
Nonetheless, the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets
have both signed a deal with the Harrah’s Entertainment group. Even
more strange is that most online casinos do not accept sports wagers,
but the Harrah’s group does. It is not likely that America’s sports
leagues are truly concerned about sports betting corrupting their
games. In Europe, professional sporting leagues are using online
casinos to better track betting activity.
In Chicago, the Cubs sold one of Wrigley Field’s
most prominent billboard spots to Horseshoe Casino. Horseshoe Casino is
a subsidiary casino of the Harrah’s group in Hammond Indiana. In
addition to the add, the casino will also be allowed to run shuttles
from the stadium to the casino, less than half an hour away.
The partnership with Harrah’s completely undermines
the argument that professional sports leagues are against online casinos
because of the danger of sports betting. Casinos owned by Harrah’s in
Nevada offer legal sports betting daily. They even allow players to bet
on Major League Baseball games, including the Mets and the Cubs.
Regulating online casinos may be the only way the
United States can actually keep track of unethical sports betting
activity.
