Lotteries in the United States are fighting
desperately to retain its relevance in an age of virtual gambling and
online casinos. Lotteries hold the potential to increase revenue by 127
percent if they can retain their customer base and draw in new players.
However they must contend with online casinos that could take away as
much as $7 billion.
In order to appeal to a new generation of gamblers
raised on the Internet and loyal to online casinos, lotteries in the
Untied States must develop a whole new strategy for attracting a player
base. In fact state lotteries may have to battle online casinos on
their own turf, over the Internet.
Back in 2007, a survey of 1,000 adults in the
United States with consistent access to the Internet revealed that 56
percent either ‘strongly’ or ‘somewhat’ desired access to lottery games
online.
The numbers for online casinos are undeniable.
World wide the Internet gambling industry is worth nearly $20 billion.
Approximately half of that some come from American players. Lotteries
must contend with the fact that though certain financial transactions
between online casinos have been outlawed, people are so desperate for
online casino action that they are willing to resort to exploiting
loopholes in the law.
It would be a smart move on the part of state
lotteries to get in on the ground level of regulating online gambling.
Online gambling is poised to be a highly lucrative business in the
United States and the lottery could use these anxious players to broaden
their much needed customer base.
