Canada Hands Tied Over Online Casinos
It appears that the United States is standing in the way of progress
for online casinos in more ways than initially thought. The ban on
online casinos in the United States may be the reason Canada is dragging
its feet to regulate the online gambling industry. The Canadian Gaming
Summit held in Ontario failed to make head way toward regulation
possibly due to the politics between the United States and Canada.
Under the Canadian Criminal Code online gambling is forbidden in
Canada, but much like in the United States, the prohibition is a
difficult one to enforce. For the most part the anti online casino laws
in Canada go without enforcement. Estimations have reported that one
billion Canadian dollars are wagered at online casinos operated by
foreign companies.
The Canadian Gaming Summit in Windsor, Ontario happening this April
has created a stir among delegates and observers. It is thought that the
ban in the USA on online gambling has stalled the political will for
federal regulations in the Canadian landscape. Fears were expressed that
the Canadian government may have the missed its opportunity to change
the present laws.
“The regulatory void threatens to widen should moves initiated by
Congressman Barney Frank gain traction in Washington DC,” said Paul
Burns, the vice-president of the Canadian Gaming Association.
“The situation in Canada is not sustainable for much longer,”
continued Burns.
“What is happening in the US, in public policy terms, is happening
fairly quickly, and this flow of money outside of Canada will increase
exponentially if the US finds its own regulatory solution for online
gambling.”
