Australian Censorship
It looks like Australia is prepared to proceed with its
plans to censor the Internet. Censorship of the Internet is perhaps on of the
most awful things a government can do to its people. The virtue of the Internet
is the access to unfiltered information, giving the masses for the first time in
history the ability to make up their own mind on a subject. None the less,
Australia seems to be moving forward with a filtering process to remove unwanted
content from reach of Australian.
The proposed law would create a filtering system that would
block over 10,000 ‘unwanted’ websites, it would also see the creation of the
Australian Communications and Media Authoriy. But, what happens if the list
contains flaws? Not so long ago a draft of the list was already leaked and it
does contain flaws. Mixed in with websites carrying images of child pornography
and bestiality are online casinos and even a site belonging to a dentist in
Brisbane.
The Australian government has already confessed to that the
draft blacklist did indeed contain errors. Communications Minister Stephen
Conroy made the admission in response during a televised conference after more
than 2,000 viewers brought up questions regarding the Internet censorship plan.
Australia is yet another country that has attempted to
utilize prohibition to get rid of an undesirable industry. In 2001 the Internet
Gambling Act outlaws online casinos in the country. Despite that, as is always
the case, online casinos and the Internet gambling industry have thrived in
Australia.
