Rob At Your Own Risk

I have no doubt in my mind that there will people with criminal inclinations that will see the thousands of slot machines that are being unveiled in New York City as an opportunity to make an easy dollar.  It seems to me that it is inevitable that some desperate criminal will try to rob some unlucky patron of their winnings.  But even with this knowledge I highly doubt that the casino will generate more crime in the area.  I know that sounds counter intuitive, but my simple point is that criminals often need to get burned before they learn the stove is simply too hot to touch.

Philadelphia, in my opinion, is a much rougher town than New York is now or at least their residents seem more inclined to do something stupid, but even in that city attempting to rob a casino or its patrons have become a big mistake.  Shortly after the Sugar House casino became operational a pair of thugs followed an unlucky man home beat him in an attempt to alleviate him of his slot machine winnings.  Within a few hours that faces of the assailants were all over the web.  In a post 9/11 New York City there is no way that a brand new casino is going to be built without the top surveillance equipment in the world watching every corner of the establishment. A thief can try rob a person by mugging them, but it is likely to be a major mistake and there is likely to be some eye in the sky that will get a positive ID on their faces.
