Slot Machines Are Not So Much the Issue
Not every person that objects to state’s legalizing slot machines and gambling have a problem with gambling. Many of them just do not like the idea of the state making money off of gambling. This point of view is the reason why it is tough and typically unwise to legislate morality. This concern operates on the notion that gambling is inherently bad or evil. I certainly do not think that gambling is evil. I do no believe anything is evil, particularly, but gambling is certainly an activity that some people are capable of doing to much of and certainly even to the point where they do financial harm to themselves. But that is not the majority of gamblers.
People are going to gamble regardless of the law. If gambling is not legal in their state, then people have never had a problem travelling to other states were gambling is allowed. If gambling were illegal in all of the United States, people would likely still gamble on the black market or find legal loophole which allow them to continue gambling, like many people are currently going with online casino. If people want clean, fair gambling that is not run but organized crime and does not involve pitting animals against each other in deadly combat, state sponsored casinos is a much more responsible alternative. This way, even if a person does have a gambling problem, he is not gambling in a venue the is directly cheating him out of his money and preying on his vulnerability.
