What’s A Horse?

Horses are not something that people can relate to anymore.  That is the simple ugly truth of the situation.  I feel bad for all these horse farmers praying that slot machines be legalized at racetracks so they can continue to make money off of raising and caring for horses, but that will eventually have to dry up.  It was not until I stopped and thought about it, but horse racing has to be one of the most lucrative businesses still remaining for a horse farmer.

People do not have nearly as much use for the horse as the once did.  Since the industrial revolution, horses have been taking a back seat to engines.   As a matter of fact the former importance of horses is still mentioned every time a car add talks about the horsepower of a new vehicle.  Horse used to work very hard to keep farms going, they were the fastest mode of transportation, and at one time were responsible for the one of the most fast paced gambling events in the industry.  That is no longer the case.  The average person rarely has a reason to see a horse anymore.  I see them all the time, but that is because I live in New York and I see the mounted officers in Time Square with their massive stallions trained to trample people if things get to rowdy.  There are also the little horse drawn carriage business that you will see in and around Central Park.  But other than that, I cannot think of how a horse would be essential to my personal life.
