Long, long ago horse racing was a huge cash cow in the state of New York. In all fairness there was a time where horse racing was a massive success in many parts of the country, but not like it was in New York. New York had venues where all of the big named horses and the top trainers would come through for the most watched races. That seems like a lifetime ago when you take a look at the state of classic racing venues like the Aqueduct and Belmont Park. New York did make an effort to salvage something of their horse racing industry by introducing slot machines next door to these venues, but that seems to be more of the state transitioning its focus to casino revenue than it is an attempt to save racing.
If casinos are the new focus of New York State in the way of generating gambling revenue then I do not blame them as I think racing is a dying attraction. However, New York State really needs to saddle up if that is in fact what they intend to do. There is nothing more absurd than doing a bold action half way. There is no reason why the slots parlors of New York should not already be equipped with table games. This especially true since the city has just brought in the top casino operator in the world to build a world class venue next to one of the most important internationl airports in the world.

The New York Lottery was established in 1967 when it was approved by a statewide referendum. To date, the Lottery has raised $34 billion in aid for education in the state. I find it hard to believe that this is all the state has made for education. Not that $34 billion is a small amount of money, but New York has one of the most densely populated cities on the face of the earth. Not only is New York City an important factor, but there is also the fact that the New York State Lottery has some of the highest sales figures in the country. Even if people are not buying up all the lottery tickets that are sold in almost every corner store in the city, the state has a pretty successful slot machine program. And more slot machines are on the way.
The Resort Worlds Casino is going to be a major contribution to the New York State Lottery and there ought to be a notable difference in the amount of revenue that the state pulls in to its coffers. The casino in Queens is going to pull in more revenue than all of the slots parlors already established in the state combined. As much as I would like to see these tax dollars make a difference in the amount of personal tax I pay to the city, at the very least I want to see a difference in education in this city. There are few things more important to a country than education.

As a slot machines enthusiasts I recently shared with my roommate that Genting was building a massive casino in Queens. It boggles my mind that more people are not aware of this huge project being built in the city. It is sort of a big deal that will generate a lot of money for the state, the city, and the area in Queens where it will be built. His response was not a very positive one.. or an educated one. In his defense he does not particularly familiar with casinos or how much of a cash cow they are for a state. He immediately assumed that that particular area of Queens was doomed to become a seedy slum. I imagine his perspective of casinos has been shaped by television and the wealth of negative media that is distributed about casinos.
I assured him that decline is not necessarily the fate of Queens, although I am not sure how much worse a few slot machines can make Queens if that is the case. However, I have a strong feeling that the very opposite will happen with the area surrounding the casino. This casino is going to bring a lot of money into the state and the city. Legislators and law enforcement have major interest in making this area as safe as possible. If the venue gains the reputation of being a dangerous spot it will be a major investment that will be tossed to the wind. The casino alone will pay for increased police activity in the area.

Genting is going to bring a lot to New York City when they finally complete the Resorts World Casino in New York City. The venue will be one of the largest casinos in the nation with almost 5,000 casinos to start. I have a sneaking suspicion that table games will soon follow. If the state is smart they will take advantage of the international appeal of having a casino just a few miles away from the JFK International airport; many countries do not value the slot machine nearly as much as the United States does. The casino will, hopefully, bring life and business back to the crumbling Aqueduct racing venues. However, it will certainly bring business and a nightlife to the area surrounding the casino.
However, as a resident not only of New York State, but also of the city I have to wonder what this new casino is going to do for me besides make it easy for me to access a casino when I so please. Reports predict that the casino will make more money than all of the other slots parlors in the state combined and I believe it. I am certain a good portion of the money is going to New York City as typically the town that hosts a casino gets a decent cut of the tax revenue. My question is how that will effect me as a New York City resident that pays an unreasonable amount of personal tax. I expect to see a reduction my personal taxes.

As a person that lives in the fair city of New York and actually in Manhattan, not the outer boroughs, I have very mixed feelings about the fact that a casino is coming to the area. First of all I think it is a great idea to build a casino right off of the MTA Metro line and I have no doubt that the Genting casino will be a huge success. I still believe they need to add table games to their gaming offerings, but for now slot machines will suffice. The venue will still be more successful than any other venue in the state just by virtue of being in New York City. However, I have to wonder how the state could need anymore revenue after all of the taxes and tolls that are charged daily on the residents of this state, particularly those living in the city.
New York City is an extremely expensive place to live. Almost to the point that it feels unreasonable. I happen to have a lot of artists in my personal circle and even the successful ones I find are struggling each day to survive. Taken from out paychecks are federal tax, state tax, and even city tax. Tolls to get on and off of the island of Manhattan. I completely understand that there are a lot of people hear and it takes a lot of money to run the city, but the taxes do not seem to ever stop climbing. It is a nightmare.

It will take more than just remodelling the Trump Marina in order to find a new identity for Atlantic City and a new identity is exactly what the resort town is in need of if they intend to compete with the new casinos that have sprung up in the region. For a while Atlantic City appeared as the Las Vegas Strip of the Northeast and the idea of having a water front gambling town was brilliant. However, now that slot machines and table games are appearing in several states in the region their is little to distinguish Atlantic City from the rest of these regional casino programs. There are certainly some large casino and hotels in Atlantic City, but none on the scale of the Las Vegas venues and none that cannot be closely rivaled by some casinos in Pennsylvania.
This is not the first time Atlantic City has been in search of a new identity. Several decades before it turned into New Jersey’s gambling town, Atlantic City’s main attraction was the shops and clubs on the boardwalk. The place offered an incredible nightlife and fun for the entire family. When all that went south the state decided in 1975 to bring casinos in and Atlantic City was reborn. It is hard to say exactly what Atlantic City can do to distinguish itself once more from the new generation of casinos that have stolen away much of its business. Some people believe that a combination of old world Atlantic City and new casino projects like the Golden Nugget might do the trick.

I am glad to hear that Atlantic City has some appreciation for what the the Golden Nugget is doing with the old Trump Marina. It is clear to me that the statement that is being made as the Golden Nugget management remodels the entire casino while guests are still welcome to spin slot machines and roll dice at the tables is more than just about making sure people know that this is not the old Trump Marina with a new name on it. The statement also goes beyond that and makes it clear that Golden Nugget does not want to be associated with the old Atlantic City either. This is a necessary separation because Atlantic City is going through a bit of an identity crisis as it loses its status as the second most popular casino destination in the United States to the new casinos of Pennsylvania.
Joseph Kelly, president of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber, is well aware of the statement that is being made by Golden Nugget and he rightly has not taken any offence to it. Atlantic City does not have the reputation that it once had and the signs of decline are present in almost every casino on the board walk. Golden Nugget is hoping to be the beacon of a new era for the resort town.
“I think it’s good leadership to make sure that they’re showcasing the improvements as it goes along,” said Joseph Kelly. “It really builds excitement and is a great image for people to see that things are happening here.”

Taking over a legacy is a very tough thing to do and it comes with a lot of necessary political maneuvers. I can not help but think of President Barack Obama when he first took office after the disastrous administration of George W. Bush. Hear is a President that promised to bring change to the country and he was immediately handicapped with a massive recession that he took no part in creating. During his first few months in office he had to spend a lot of his time separating himself from the the mistakes of the previous administration because the American people have a very short memory and would quickly start blaming him for the country’s economic struggle even though he had nothing to do with it. I suppose the Golden Nugget casino is making a similar statement as they establish their new venue in the old Trump Marina.
There is no mistaking that as they remodel the entire venue in front of the guests that they are making the statement “under new management.” Everything inside of the casino is in transition, even where the slot machines are located on the gaming floor. This is a very bold way to show everyone that they are not just putting a fresh coat of paint over the crumbling old casino and that this is not just the same venue with a new name slapped over it. It has been a long time since the Trump Marina was looked at as a place of luxury and the Golden Nugget is making a statement that they will bring luxury back to the old casino.

Every casino makes an effort to have a theme as a part of attracting customers to their slot machines and table games. Typically that theme revolves around the idea of creating a feeling of wealth and luxury. It might be of a different era or of a different region of the world. Often times they miss the mark and the whole place comes of as cheap and tacky; that is certainly the case for the Sugar House casino in Philadelphia’s Fish Town district… but its Philly, they are doing their best. However, these themes are usually created as an illusion to make people feel like they are a part of some type of upper class where money is not so much an issue, after all you have to put guest in a spending mood when they visit a casino.
I would have to say, though the process has received some complaints, the remodelling process that is taking place at the Golden Nugget casino in Atlantic City is perhaps the most honest temporary them I have ever seen from a casino. Here is a casino that is in the middle of making itself better and they are allowing guests to watch it happen before their eyes. In this process there is an acknowledgement of what came before the Golden Nugget took over and all of the glory that the Trump Marina did experience in the past, while still creating anticipation and excitement for a new area of gambling to come. The idea is brilliant.

Reports from the Golden Nugget, the site of the former Trump Marina, is that the sound of construction was so loud that it drowned out the very noisy slot machines that clutter the gaming room floor. Of course some would argue that the casino has no business offering slot machines and other gaming while there is still major construction going on inside of the building. Safety concerns aside having major construction happening while people are at a casino flies in the face of the aesthetic that most casinos have been trying to establish for decades and is the opposite of what most gamblers have come to expect from a casino resort. Gambling is supposed to generate an illusion of potential wealth and casinos are supposed to be places of great luxury and elegance.
I would have to argue that the Golden Nugget is not breaking from tradition by any means. If anything all of the construction that is currently underway is like a temporary theme for the hotel and the operators have taken full advantage of the opportunity with banners and everything. The idea is that luxury is coming to the Golden Nugget and the guest get a chance to watch it take place. I believe it is a rather clever idea on the part of the casino operator in that they have taken advantage of what could be a very embarrassing phase for the hotel and turned it into, not just a spectacle, but a positive spectacle and a once in a life time exhibition.
