When writing about the news of any industry, it is easy to focus on the negative. You of course have to bring light to all sorts of scandals and unjust actions, but you cannot get caught up in just that side of the story; there are always multiple sides to a story. The Anne Arundel County slot machines issue is no different. Cordish Cos is planning on building a casino with 4,750 slot machines in the parking lot of the Arundel Mills Mall. If voters refuse in two day, the casino project will likely never happen. However, what would happen if voters to approve the construction.
Initially, before all of this went down, Cordish Cos expected to finish the project by December of 2011. However this whole zoning ordinance case has really put things on hold. Now the company believes that if they get the go ahead from voters they could reasonably have the venue completely finished by mid 2012. The venue will open in pats because, Cordish Cos. has big plans. According to the company, just to get revenue started they have also played around with opening a temporary slots venue while the rest of construction continues on. The temporary slots venue would take only about 4 months to complete.
The venue, if it is aloud to proceed, will be huge. The whole facility will be about 215,00 square feet with a 125,000 square foot gambling floor. The venue will also come complete with fine dining options and and live entertainment venue.

Rob Annicelli is an example of the damage that Penn National Gaming has done to the reasoning of the Maryland voter when it comes to the Question A issue. Question A refers to the question on the upcoming ballot in Maryland that would approve the construction of a casino offering 4,750 slot machines right next to the Arundel Mills Mall in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
According to Annicelli, when the people of Anne Arundel County approved the referendum that legalized 15,000 slot machines in the state, they never imaged that a casino would be built next to a family friendly mall instead of a horse racing track. He says that if the casino is not built next to the mall, it will be built elsewhere and the revenue will still come in.
Annicelli is not so much wrong as he is misguided. The fact that he brings up the shopping mall and the horse racing track in the same sentences, as if it is an either or issues, is completely misguided. Unless Maryland changes the law in order to show favor to Penn National Gaming the slot machines will never appear at Laurel Park. On the note of revenue coming in, he is right. The casino will be built elsewhere and the revenue will come in. But the casino will likely not be built in Anne Arundel County, it is unlikely that Cordish Cos. will build it, and it is even more unlikely that whatever the new venue is will have 4,750 slot machines. It will likely be much smaller.

Before Maryland voters enter the voting booths next week and make their opinions about Question A, they need to look at history. The first historical point they need to look at is the recent history of their own state with regard to slot machines. Maryland legalized slot machines back in the 2008 election season. Since then the state has been plagued with issue after issue in getting to program up and running. One casino is running at the moment and that same company has been instrumental in delaying the construction of the casino whose fate rides on Question A being passed. That is not coincidence, that is politics.
They also have to look at the fact that for the next few years the only casinos operating in the state will be the Hollywood Casino at Perryville and the Ocean Downs venue. Every other casino has run into impossible delays and the Rocky Gap Lodge venue has not even secured a bidder to operate the venue.
New York also provides an important lesson for the people of Maryland. The Cordish Cos. casino, with 4,750 slot machines will be the biggest an most lucrative casino in all of Maryland. This is very similar to the story of the slots venue being built next to the Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York. If Anne Arundel County, Maryland does not act now their casino project will likely be delayed for a decade or more just like what happend with the Aqueduct venue in New York.

You have to give credit where credit is due, even when it seems slightly evil. Penn National Gaming is just fighting competition, but they are doing it by misguiding a whole state worth of people about the issues. They are not exactly lying, I am not saying that, but they are purposefully playing of the ignorance of the people in order to move their agenda forward. Although that sort of behavior has become common place in American politics, I do not think it is a very American thing to do; assuming our country still had ethical standards.
Penn National Gaming is simply saying that they agree with the concerned citizens of Anne Arundel County that slot machines should not be located next to a shopping mall where families go on a daily basis. Therefore they have donated a lot of money to support the No Slots at the Mall group. Unfortunately it does not stop there. They have also introduced the idea that the slot machines would be better suited for the Laurel Park racing venue where gambling is already legal and children are not constantly exposed to slot machines. The problem with that is that they know full well that slot machines will never operate at Laurel Park, unless Maryland changes their gambling laws in their favor. Penn National Gaming owns Laurel Park and Maryland Law forbids one operator holding more than one slots operator license in the state. They are distracting the people of Anne Arundel County from the truth that the Cordish Cos offer is sort of a now or never type of deal.

It is a shame, but my political preferences these days have tended to side with the group that is telling the least amount of lies. In the case of the Anne Arundel County, Maryland Question A saga, it appears to me that Cordish Cos. is telling the least amount of lies, which makes them my protagonist. It is obvious that Cordish Cos. has a primary goal of building the biggest slots casino in Maryland, but they are not lying about the benefits it will bring to Anne Arundel County. A casino with 4,750 slot machines in a state where only 15,000 slot machines have been legalized is going to bring in a lot of money to the county and state coffers. It also take a lot of people to operate a venue like that. There is no question that the venue will create close to 4,000 jobs, both permanent and temporary.
That is the situation. Cordish Cos. is also trying to inform people the if the casino is rejected in this round of voting it will be quite some time before the state figures out what to do with that particular casino license. Likely even years. One thing is almost certain is that the venue will not be assigned to another location in Anne Arundel County. So the people that think they are simply on whether they think the slot machines located near the mall need to realize that the real question is whether they want the casino and all of its benefits to be built in their county at all.

Operating a casino is always a gamble. I am neither telling the people of Anne Arundel County that the casino being proposed by Cordish Cos. is going to solve all of their financial problems nor am I telling them that the casino is immune to causing problems in the community. What I am saying is that it is a gamble worth taking. It is possible and has happened time and time again that casino brings slot machines to a community and the revenue and business boost end up being a boon for the surrounding area. How it will go, I do not have a sure answer because it could easily go either way. However, what I am more certain of is that this opportunity is not going to come around to the country in the next 10 years if at all. In truth this could delay the whole prospect of finding a bidder for one of Maryland’s five casino for at least a decade.
“I think those people who are saying now or never are correct,” said Cordish Cos. President David Cordish, who recently went door to door to makes sure people in the community new what was at stake with Question A on the ballot next week.
It is not likely that the state will find another location in Anne Arundel County to build the casino or that they will even give the project to a company as established as Cordish Cos. The whole issue will likely get tied up in bureaucracy and then eventually given to a company that wants to build a smaller casino, with less slot machines, offering few jobs, and in another county.

So, before I go making David Cordish look like some sort of hero and soothsayer as he goes door to door to encourage people to vote in favor of Question A in Anne Arundel County, let us take a look at whether the man is not just being a plan old fear monger. He is well aware that there is a sense of ‘now or never’ when it comes to the opportunity of building a casino in Anne Arundel County with 4,750 slot machines. However, rival Penn National Gaming is making it seem like if they casino is not built at the mall, it can always be reassigned to Laurel Park.
The Penn National story does not make any sense. Laurel Park is owned in part by Penn National Gaming. Their are laws against gaming operators having more than one casino in Maryland. They would have to change the laws for Penn National Gaming in order for them to operate slot machines at both Laurel Park and Hollywood Casino at Perryville. That will likely never happen.
But the truth is, if Cordish Cos. does not win this Question A situation they will likely be stripped of their operating license and the casino project will be thrown into limbo. The state will have to find another eligible bidder, not Penn National Gaming, to propose a new casino project. They have not even found a bidder for the Rocky Gap Lodge venue. It is also unlikely that a new project would bring 4,750 slot machines to the state.

David Cordish is a company president that is not afraid to get involved in a cause. I am not to going to try and turn the man into some hero, although he seems this way in an age where we hear endless stories about presidents and CEO that receive unjustified bonuses as they drive their companies into financial ruin. However David Cordish is not the CEO of a bank or an accounting firm, he is the president of a casino operating company, specifically Cordish Cos. RIght now he is in the midst of trying to makes sure that the people of Maryland get all the information they need when they go to the voting polls on Tuesday. One of the biggest issues facing the Maryland voter is the Question A issue. This Question will determine whether Cordish Cos. will be allowed to build a casino in the parking lot of the Arundel Mills Mall with 4,750 slot machines.
Other than the roughly $30 million dollars that the slot machines are estimated to provide Anne Arundel County in tax revenues, the casino will is also expected to create about 4,000 jobs in the community in order to both build and operate the casino. David Cordish is trying to explain to the people of Anne Arundel County that if they miss this particular opportunity that it will not likely come around again in the near future. Cordish is going door to door to make sure as many voters as he can have all the information that they need to make an informed decision on the matter.

4,000 jobs. According to Cordish Cos. that is about how many jobs will be created just by building a slots parlor in the parking lot of the Arundel Mills Mall. I do not understand what people are so up in arms about. Who cares if the casino is located right next door to the mall. All that means is that more people will visit the mall and spend more money. The fear of crime is not something that can be directly attributed to the casino. That is a community problem that needs to be rooted out anyway.
The traffic issue seems completely silly. There is terrible traffic in the Washington, D.C. Metro Area anyway. In fact the area has the third worse traffic in the entire nation. Traffic is a problem with infrastructure. It just means that the roads are not enough to handle the amount of commuters trying to get to and fro. The answer is not to turn away potential business opportunities in the area, but fix the roads so that it can accommodate the traffic.
4,000 jobs is something that Maryland can really use right now. It is something that the United States economy can use. The tax revenue that will come from slot machines is something that both the state and Anne Arundel County could really use right now. If the people of Anne Arundel County really know what is best for them, they would take a gamble on this casino. If crime problems arise, cross that bridge when you get to it.

Well, if the Cordish Cos. loses their slot machine operators license in Anne Arundel County, it will not be for a lack of trying. Next week, voters will decide on the fate of a slots parlor that was supposed to be built by the Cordish Cos. at the Arundel Mills Mall. The issue is Question A on the ballot. If residents vote in favor of the measure it means that slot machines will operate in a venue built in the mall parking lot. But, not must any venue. Cordish Cos. is planning to build the biggest gambling venue in the entire state. The casino will have 4,750 slot machines. That is at very close to being one third of the 15,000 slot machines legalized in Maryland back in 2008.
If voters reject the casino, there is no telling what will happen to the venue. There is even a chance that the license will be rebid and and Cordish Cos. will lose their opportunity. The company will not just lay down and let that happen. They are involved in a door to door campaign up until voting day that informs residents of all the financial benefits that will come from the casino. It also informs them of the various groups in the community that are in support of the gambling venue. The campaign is being head up by none other than company preident David Cordish. There is something charming about the president getting in the community, this is a sign of a company that believes in what they are doing and willing to fight for what they want.
